Ashurst Sunday glider competitions

We had several excellent days at Ashurst this year. It’s an idyllic spot, deep in the Sussex countryside.
The terrain makes for interesting thermal soaring with varied fields, isolated trees and undulations around the site.

The main class held here was RES – rudder, elevator and spoilers. These are the only controls permitted. The models have a maximum wingspan of 2m.

On the calmest days, several members brought along their Keil Kraft Caprice (converted for electric motor launch). The Keil Kraft Caprice is a classic 51-inch wingspan free-flight towline glider designed originally by Neville Willis in 1959. They are great fun to fly in light or zero wind conditions, so gave some close and competitive flying.

New this year was a one-design class for the Gruner Innovation 1.245m span electrically launched glider. Tom Gaskin made a couple of test flights and seemed pleased with the performance.

Take a look at the club web site for the results of the various glider competitions.

Thank you to the organisers, helpers and all who took part in a very successful and enjoyable series.

Here are some photos from the final Sunday, 16th August 2026.
